Out of the Swim – ‘The Garden’ (feat. Annie Booth)

First up this week is a collaboration between indietronica 4-piece, Out of the Swim, and Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Annie Booth. ‘The Garden’ is taken from Out of the Swim’s forthcoming EP, ‘The University of Skinflats’, and draws elements of electronica, jazz and indie rock music. It’s a very chilled one, with soft vocals and synth stabs, accompanied by a continuous jazzy rhythm on the kit.

Out of the Swim have been around the music scene in Scotland for some time now, but if you are new to their work, just know that their past releases have been met with praise from the likes of previous Xfm Scotland presenter Dominik Diamond, BBC Radio Scotland’s Roddy Hart and online Scottish culture site Scots Wae Hae. They have a bright future, and we’ll be keeping our eyes pealed for the upcoming EP, which is due to release this summer.

The Good Manners – ‘Mi Amor’

The Good Manners are originally from native countries Spain and Guatamala, and now find themselves relocated to London. Gabriel and Marcos decided to move to be apart of the ever growing UK music scene. The boys are always working to find the groove in their music, and “continue to study the greats in order to achieve so”.

This particular number is very minimal with a relaxed feel. It starts with subtle, muffled acoustic guitar and vocal which has had EQ altered, along with some background vinyl noise. Once the EQ normalises, the guitar and gorgeous harmonised vocals are joined by shakers and castanets to add an extra dose of Spain to the sound.

Faunn – ‘Run’

The third pick comes in the form of a solo project by Carl Hodgetts, once the singer of folk-rock 4-piece, Draw Me Stories. ‘Run’ is Carl’s first single release from his new project where he goes by the stage name, ‘Faunn‘.

The track can be streamed on SoundCloud, YouTube, and Bandcamp (all links displayed below), and you can buy the track via Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to Help Musicians. Help Musicians are a UK charity that provide funding for artists of all ages, backgrounds and genres – https://www.helpmusicians.org.uk/ – On top of profits going to a great cause, the track isn’t bad either! Carl has spoken about how he takes influence from film music, nu-disco and video game music in his production, something we definitely noticed due to the range of funky synth sounds and 808 drums.

Nuala – ‘Split Down the Middle’

Our penultimate pick comes from singer-songwriter, Nuala, who has a new single out today entitled ‘Split Down The Middle’. The track is taken from her upcoming EP ‘Me&Me’, and it’s set us right in the mood for summer – just in time for the quarantine to be lifted.

The song radiates a great energy with a funky reggae beat accompanying a high energy vocal (and whistling) performance. Nuala has already attracted the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music’s tastemaker Steve Lamacq, and we’re sure that this latest song will push her further into the limelight.

Roachford – ‘Give It Up and Let It Go’

Our final selection comes from a music industry veteran, whose music has been enjoyed by thousands over the last few decades. Andrew Roachford first saw mainstream success with his track ‘Cuddly Toy’ in the late 80’s, but “now finds himself writing and recording the best songs of his life” in 2020. ‘Give It Up and Let It Go‘ comes from Roachford’s latest EP with the same title. It’s a proper feel good number, perfect for a sunny afternoon in the garden.
